Brussels // day trip

After a two hour drive we arrived in Brussels in Belgium, a place well known as the capital of Europe. It was a lovely sunny day and not too cold so perfect for just walking around and taking in the sights. As it was the first time I'd been to a belgian city, I didn't have a specific plan of what I wanted to see or do except for going to the hard rock cafe which I'm a huge fan of but that's something for another post.

Our first experience was to walk through a fancy shopping promenade filled with some very exclusive shops selling anything from Rolex's & designer handbags to the best in belgian chocolate. We popped into one of the coffee houses there for well-needed refreshments after our drive. A lovely little place with rustic features, an all organic menu and a great view of shoppers passing by. It was a bit on the pricey side but not too bad if you consider the location.

Feeling refreshed; we walked on through the winding streets full of character (and lots of restaurants) and finally found ourselves in the Grand Place which is a large square in the middle of Brussels commonly used as a meeting place and for sightseeing. When we were there, they were just decorating the christmas tree and erecting the stall that will house a very large nativity set. All of the action will be taking place the following week when the christmas market begins but we wanted nicer weather and the chance to explore more than just the market so we went last weekend.

The hard rock cafe is also perfectly situated on this square so we went there for lunch as it was about midday by that time. An added bonus is that we didn't have to wait too long for a table, about 10 minutes.

On we went exploring after lunch and found ourselves at the MOOF museum which is all about comic strips and animation. It was really interesting to see the earlier versions of comics such as the Smurfs, Tin Tin and Asterix and how they progressed through the ages. It wasn't too expensive to get in which was good as it is not an overly huge museum, but it was fun for us and the girls and kept us busy for about an hour. If you take your time and read everything then it can last a lot longer.

We really enjoyed our day in Brussels and are busy planning our next trip to Cologne in Germany which is also only a few hours drive away.

Thanks for reading!
